Telling a story takes many different forms. A news report, for example, is formulaic; the 'what, where, when, who and how' is front and centre. Other messaging might need to be more nuanced; a more subtle narrative might need to be developed, targeted to a specific audience. Editing, meanwhile, is an exercise in providing clarity, conveying meaning in the most efficient manner.
As a freelance journalist and consultant with more than 30 years of experience in the defence sector, Peter undertakes the whole range of these tasks for clients operating within the international aerospace and defence market.
Quality, not quantity
Prior to going freelance in January 2022, Peter worked for defence and security stalwart Janes for almost 33 years.
After joining Janes in 1989, Peter worked as a sub editor and reporter for Janes Defence Weekly (JDW) for several years and then moved on to Janes Intelligence Review, which he edited for three years until the end of 1999. After a year as managing editor of the company’s Security Strategic Business Unit, Peter then became the company’s first web content managing editor: a period in which he also worked as a JDW special correspondent, reporting from global hotspots such as Kosovo and Baghdad.
Appointed as the editor of JDW in March 2004, Peter occupied that role until he left the company in December 2021 to pursue a freelance career.
In 2018 Peter won the inaugural John Morrocco Award for Best In-Depth Defense Reporting at the Defence Media Awards (DMAs) in Washington, DC, for a feature article focusing on ballistic missile defence. In 2022 he won the DMA for the Best Military Propulsion submission with a feature focusing on hybrid electric drive technology in armoured vehicles.
